The TFEM recognizes varying driving conditions, e.g. driving in the city, in the country, or on the interstate, by electronically monitoring the position of the accelerator pedal.  The system is especially designed to detect the continuous starts and stops made by waste collection vehicles during the waste collection process.

The TFEM restricts the accelerator pedal function based on load requirement (capacity and/or hill starts), to 80%, for example, in order to achieve optimum fuel efficiency start up without affecting performance or torque.  In automatic transmissions, the system utilizes the optimum RPMs and prevents excessive gear shifts.  Once a change in driving conditions is detected, the restriction on the accelerator is removed.
