  Frequently Asked Questions

Q) What is causing one "STAGE" to stay on?

A) If there isn't a 12 Volt + signal on the input side (left side) of the Relay Box, then the Relay Box is faulty. For addtional help view our Troubleshooting Guide.  You may also view our video training series for instruction on how to test and troubleshoot the Telma system.

Q) What is the Air Gap supposed to be on a retarder?

A) The proper air gap depends on the model of the retarder.  The Air Gap is the distance between the moving rotor and the pole shoes (steel pads) on a retarder.  To find the identification of your retarder visit Identify My Retarder.  For example, a Focal FN72-40 model is between .055-.061 thousandths of a inch and .041-.047 for a AXIAL (AC82-45, AD72-45) series. See the AC / AD / FN Spare Parts Catalogs for all retarders.

Q) How can I identify the type and serial number of my retarder?

A) Telma has two Types of retarders, the AXIAL (mounted to the chassis of the vehicle, Models AD, AC, CC) and FOCAL (mounted to the rear axle, Models FN, FV, FP). The Telma part numbers and serial numbers are etched on the stator frame of the retarder itself. It will appear on the bottom for a AC or CC series and top for the AD and FN series. Click to Identify My Retarder.

Q) Why doesn't the Telma work since the ABS light has come on?

A)  The Telma is designed to not allow operation whenever a ABS Event is sensed. This is now a customer option, new installations do not include this feature, if you have an install with this option enabled, you may disable it by following the TIL05069 ABS Warning Light Elimination TSB.

Q) Why can't I find the grease tube on the TELMA?

A) All the newer TELMA brakes since 1998 have a greaseless permanently sealed bearing construction.

Q) What is the white, black or grey box on the frame rail?

A) This is referred to by many as the "contactor box", "control box", or "control module". We reffer to it as the Relay Box, or BAC / BEP. The White box is the BAC - Part # JD331121 ( BAC Spare Part Catalog), and the black electronic box is the BEP - Part # JE341121 (discontinued: BEP Availability). The grey box is a Control Box, which includes the same relay panel in the JD331121, with pressure switches inside one grey box. TID11009 Telma Control Box.
